We already know you’ve enjoyed handmade sourdough bread, a latte, and a gluten-free cookie or two from Andy’s Artisan Bread in South Frankfort. (If you haven’t, do so right away!) This bakery, which opened at the Franklin County Farmers Market in 2020 and with a storefront in 2022, has quickly become a Frankfort favorite. Owners Andy and Tara Bissell, and their son, Gideon, moved to Kentucky from Asheville, North Carolina, and brought with them not only their talent in crafting delicious baked goods but also their love of the outdoors.
“We love living in a town with the Kentucky River running through it. I think the river brings creativity and new ideas, and it is inspiring and refreshing for us, having lived in places that didn't have natural waterways so close,” Tara says. “We are amazed by the ease of being in nature here, often within just minutes from where we live. Cove Spring, Fort Hill, the Elkhorn Creek, the river walk, the Liberty Hall gardens, West Sixth Farm are places that we like to go to just relax and enjoy the beauty of Frankfort.”
Attendees of the 2022 Land Extravaganza, Woods and Waters Land Trust’s annual fundraising event, had the opportunity to bid on a bakery experience, learning to make croissants with Andy.
“It would be amazing if everyone had awareness and some involvement in preserving our natural resources and beautiful surroundings, and WWLT makes it accessible with their local events—truly a lot of fun as well as championing a good cause,” Tara says.
