ANNUAL EVENTS

Paddlers at Lee’s Landing in Frankfort September 2022.

Paddle For A Purpose

As the Kentucky River flows through Franklin, Owen, Henry and Carroll counties, waters pass through four locks and dams, under bald eagle nests stories above, and through native marine-life habitat. For four Sundays in October, Woods and Waters Land Trust invites people of all paddling abilities to explore this treasured local resource at Paddle For A Purpose, made possible by Canoe Kentucky. Each Sunday event features an enjoyable paddle progressing north through a new section of the Kentucky River and a different topic of discussion.

Paddle For A Purpose will connect more people with the Kentucky River as a valuable local asset and raise money for Woods and Waters Land Trust’s work in protecting land and waterways in the lower Kentucky River watershed.

Extravaganza

Every year Woods & Waters Land Trust is proud to host the Land Extravaganza in a unique location to showcase the beautiful places in our watershed.

Frankfort City Nature Challenge

Become a citizen scientist for Franklin County! We are taking part in The City Nature Challenge, one of the largest community-science events in the world.

Here's how the City Nature Challenge works:

From April 25 to April 28, 2025, take a photo of a plant, animal, insect or bird, and upload it to the iNaturalist app. Be sure to include the location of your observation. Any recorded in Franklin County will be added to the Frankfort City Nature Challenge project.

Participate in the City Nature Challenge on your own—in your yard, a local forest, a stream, your favorite park, etc.—or come to a wildflower hike, moth lighting, bioblitz or other organized event.

It’s OK if you don’t know what it is that you’re photographing. Just take a photo clear enough that it can be identified by fellow City Nature Challenge participants and iNaturalist volunteers.

On May 5, worldwide rankings will be announced to see which area can gather the most observations of nature, find the most species and engage the most people in the City Nature Challenge.
